This proverb indicates that the future destiny or quality of something or someone is known from its initial signs. Just as good injera is recognized by its appearance and smell when it comes out of the griddle, a calf that will grow into a large and strong one is distinguished by its behavior and strength even in its youth. In general, it shows that one can predict the outcome of something from its initial stages.
