ይህ ምሳሌ በአማርኛ ከእንግሊዝኛው የተለመደ አባባል ('Blood is thicker than water') ተቃራኒ ነው። የቤተሰብ ትስስር (ደም) ከሌሎች ግንኙነቶች (ውሃ) ያነሰ ጠንካራ ወይም አስተማማኝ ሊሆን እንደሚችል ይጠቁማል። የቤተሰብ አባላትም ሊከዱ ወይም ሊያሳዝኑ እንደሚችሉ፣ ወይም ከቤተሰብ ውጪ ያሉ ሰዎች በተወሰኑ ሁኔታዎች የበለጠ ድጋፍ ሊሰጡ እንደሚችሉ ያመላክታል።
