A 'gotha' is a large storage place for grain, while a 'dereba' might be a smaller storage bin or a part of the granary. This proverb implies that without the main, essential thing, the smaller, related things are worthless. If the foundation or the principal item is missing, then supplementary items have no meaning or utility.

ጎታ ማለት እህል የሚከማችበት ትልቅ ቦታ ሲሆን ደረባ ደግሞ የጎታ አካል ወይም ከጎታ አጠገብ ያለ ትንሽ ማከማቻ ሊሆን ይችላል። ይህ ምሳሌ የሚያመለክተው ትልቁን እና ዋናውን ነገር ካላገኘን፣ ትንሹና ተያያዥነት ያለው ነገር ዋጋ የሌለው መሆኑን ነው። መሠረታዊው ነገር ከሌለ፣ ተጓዳኝ ነገሮች ትርጉም የላቸውም።
