This proverb signifies that while a person is waiting for someone else to work for them or wishing for something they don't deserve, an unexpected misfortune can befall them. Stirring flax is an easy and not very strenuous job; picking kale, on the other hand, has its own effort. Yet, while the flax stirrer remained unharmed, the kale picker suffered a stroke. This means that fortune or misfortune comes in unexpected ways, and sometimes an unforeseen person is harmed.

ይህ ብሂል የሚያመለክተው አንድ ሰው ሌላ ሰው እንዲሰራለት እየጠበቀ ወይም ለራሱ የማይገባ ነገር ሲመኝ፣ በዚያው ጊዜ ያልተጠበቀ መጥፎ ነገር ሊደርስበት እንደሚችል ነው። ተልባን የመጥበጥ ስራ ቀላልና ብዙም አድካሚ አይደለም፤ ጎመንን የመቁረጥ ስራ ደግሞ የራሱ ድካም አለው። ሆኖም፣ ተልባ አጥባቂዋ ምንም ሳትጎዳ፣ ጎመኑን ለምትቀነጥስ ሰው ችግር ደረሰባት። ይህ ማለት ዕድል ወይም ችግር የሚመጣው ባለተጠበቀ መንገድ ነው፣ እና አንዳንድ ጊዜ ያላሰብነው ሰው ይጎዳል።
