Meaning

This proverb means that a person isolates themselves, keeps a low profile, or acts humbly due to a perceived flaw, a past mistake, or a negative reputation. Just as garlic's strong scent might lead it to be stored away or 'buried,' an individual might consciously withdraw from social interaction or public attention because of something about themselves that they believe is undesirable or embarrassing to others.
