This proverb means that a truly destitute or ignorant person is so unaware of their own state or lacks basic sense that they might ask for something luxurious (butter) from someone wise, who knows their real need (e.g., bread). ይህ ብሂል አንድ ምስኪን ወይም እውቀት የሌለው ሰው የራሱን ፍላጎት ወይም ሁኔታ የማያውቅ በመሆኑ ለምሳሌ የቅንጦት ነገር (ቅቤ) ከጠቢብ ሰው እንደሚለምን ያመለክታል። ይህ የሚያሳየው የራስን ሁኔታ በሚገባ አለማወቅን ወይም ከትክክለኛው ሰው የተሳሳተ ነገር መጠየቅን ነው።
