ቁርበት ምን ያንቋቋሀል ቢሉት ባያድለኝ ነው እንጂ የነጋሪት ወንድም ነበርኩ አለ
“When asked the hide, 'What makes you rattle (make noise)?' it replied, 'If it weren't for my bad luck, I would have been the brother of the Negarit (war drum).'”
Meaning
This proverb is about someone who feels they have the potential or 'material' to be something great, but due to unfortunate circumstances or bad luck, they are reduced to a lesser, more ordinary state. The hide, which could have been part of a powerful war drum (Negarit), is just a rattling piece of leather. It speaks to unfulfilled potential and lamenting one's fate.

ይህ ምሳሌ የሚያመለክተው ታላቅ የመሆን አቅም ወይም 'ቁስ' እንዳላቸው የሚሰማቸውን ሰዎች ነው፣ ነገር ግን በአሳዛኝ ሁኔታዎች ወይም በመጥፎ ዕድል ምክንያት ወደ ያነሰ፣ የበለጠ ተራ ሁኔታ የተሸጋገሩ። ቆዳው፣ የኃይለኛ የጦር ከበሮ (ነጋሪት) አካል ሊሆን ሲችል፣ በቀላሉ የሚርገበገብ የቆዳ ቁራጭ ሆኖ ቀርቷል። ያልተሟላ አቅምንና በእጣ ፈንታ መማረርን ይገልጻል።
