ያልገደለ ዘማች ያልወለደ አማች

✦

“A soldier who didn't kill, a son-in-law who didn't beget.”

Meaning

This proverb emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's primary duty or purpose in a given role. A soldier's main objective is to fight and achieve victory (historically implying killing the enemy), and a son-in-law's traditional role is to ensure the continuation of the family line by having children. If either fails in these fundamental responsibilities, their position or title is considered meaningless or without value. It suggests that one's worth is tied to their effectiveness in their designated role.
