Meaning

This proverb illustrates that the process of maintaining cleanliness or purity often necessitates interaction with dirt or impurity. Although water is known for its purity, in its role of washing and cleaning others, it inevitably comes into contact with dirt. Even a pure entity, in its effort to cleanse others, cannot avoid confronting or interacting with impurity. It can also imply that to achieve something good, one might have to confront or deal with unpleasant or 'dirty' situations or things. It highlights the unavoidable entanglement of the clean with the unclean when the clean is performing its intended function.

ይህ ምሳሌ ንጽህናን የማስጠበቅ ሂደት ከቆሻሻ ጋር መስተጋብር እንደሚያስፈልገው ያሳያል። ውሃ በንጽህናው የሚታወቅ ቢሆንም፣ ሌሎችን ለማጠብና ለማጽዳት ሲል ከቆሻሻ ጋር መገናኘቱ አይቀርም። ንጹህ ነገርም ቢሆን፣ ሌሎችን ለማጽዳት በሚያደርገው ጥረት ከብኩርናው ጋር መጋፈጡ አይቀርም። ይህ ደግሞ ጥሩ ነገርን ለማሳካት መጥፎ ሁኔታዎችን ወይም ነገሮችን መጋፈጥ እንደሚያስፈልግ ሊያመለክት ይችላል።
