This proverb highlights the idea that something's true nature or origin will always reveal itself, no matter how it's disguised. A drum made from a hyena (a scavenger often associated with greed/hunger) will, in its 'sound,' reveal that nature. It means that the character of a person or thing cannot be hidden forever; it will eventually manifest.
