This proverb illustrates that a burden or responsibility becomes light when shared among many, but becomes very heavy when it falls on one person alone. When fifty lemons are divided among fifty people, each gets only one lemon, which is considered a small gift or adornment. But when given to one person, it becomes a heavy burden.
